Living Root Bridges

Bridges grown from rubber-fig roots by Khasi villagers over generations.

Living Root Bridges

Best time

October to May

From Shillong

About 2.5 hours by road to Tyrna

Khasi communities guide the aerial roots of rubber fig trees across streams until they form strong, living bridges. The best known is the double-decker bridge at Nongriat.

Reaching Nongriat means a steep walk of about 3,500 steps each way from Tyrna village, so start early and carry water.
